What you’ll do

• Design, build and maintain features end to end in TypeScript/JavaScript (React front end, Node.js back end)
• Build and change GraphQL/REST APIs and the Node.js services that process manuscript data
• Write and run event consumers and producers (SNS/SQS, Kafka) and background jobs (BullMQ on Redis), with retries and duplicate-safe processing
• Model and change data in PostgreSQL, including schema migrations
• Connect to external screening services safely (timeouts, retries, fallbacks, error handling)
• Write unit and integration tests, and work with QA on end-to-end automation and test scenarios
• Add logging, metrics and tracing to your code, and use Grafana dashboards to investigate production issues
• Take part in technical refinement, estimation and lightweight design reviews
• Review code thoughtfully and help junior engineers through pairing and feedback
• Take part in production support and contribute to post-incident reviews

What you need to be successful

• 3–5 years of professional experience building production web applications in JavaScript/TypeScript
• Strong Node.js back-end experience (Express or similar) and solid React experience
• Hands-on experience designing and using GraphQL and/or REST APIs
• Good knowledge of relational databases (data modelling, SQL, migrations)
• Experience with asynchronous and event-driven processing (message queues, background jobs, retries)
• A strong testing habit: unit and integration tests by default
• Experience debugging production issues using logs and metrics
• Comfort working in an agile team and talking with product, QA and other engineering teams

Nice to have

• Experience with microservices, monorepos or modular monoliths
• AWS experience (SQS/SNS, S3, RDS, EKS) and Docker/Kubernetes
• Experience with multi-tenant SaaS or configurable workflow systems
• Experience connecting to third-party APIs or document-processing pipelines
• Familiarity with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus or Grafana
• Interest in research integrity or academic publishing
