What you’ll do
- You will work closely with Google’s Wear OS Platform Teams to architect and deliver solutions across SysUI, Wear Compose Libraries, WearServices, and cross-device APIs — driving measurable improvements in reliability, resource efficiency, and codebase maintainability.
- Identify and fix code issues in the Wear Platform, including security patches and Board Support Package (BSP) updates
- Reduce platform technical debt through targeted refactoring of the WearServices codebase for maintainability and cleanliness
- Create automated performance tests for Wear OS components (SysUI, Wear Compose Libraries) to monitor RAM usage, jank, and battery consumption
- Propose and implement architectural changes to drive resource reduction
- Fix bugs in Home / Wear Core Services / WearServices, including user-facing “papercut” issues in notification systems
- Write API coverage tests and performance benchmark infrastructure for cross-device journeys and initialization latency
- Collaborate with Google engineers to validate implementations and resolve blockers with dependent teams
- Produce clear technical documentation for architectural decisions, performance findings, and remediation actions
What you need to be successful
- Android Platform architecture and Board Support Packages (BSPs)
- Experience with security patching and low-level system debugging on Android
- Proficiency in Android performance profiling tools for memory, battery, and frame drop analysis
- Android Services and cross-device APIs
- Knowledge of SysUI and AndroidX Wear Compose Libraries
- Proven ability to analyze complex performance metrics and architect solutions for resource reduction
- Experience refactoring legacy codebases for cleanliness and long-term maintainability
- Familiarity with Buganizer or equivalent issue tracking systems for structured analysis and validation
- Proficiency in Kotlin and Java (Android); Python is a plus
- Ability to write clear, structured technical documentation
- Nice to have
- Experience with Wear OS internals or system-level Wear OS components
- Familiarity with CTS (Compatibility Test Suite) or WTS (Wear Test Suite) compliance processes
- Experience working on large-scale, multi-team Android platform projects
- Prior involvement in notification system architecture or user-experience reliability work
- Hands-on experience with Mobly or other Android test automation frameworks
