What you’ll do

• The role involves managing and maintaining an automated testing laboratory for wearable devices, as well as developing and maintaining scripts and tools to support test automation and lab operations.
• Device Onboarding & Tracking
• Onboard new devices into the lab environment, including Fitbit devices, mobile phones, and supporting equipment.
• Maintain accurate records of device ownership and ensure all incoming boards are properly assigned to owners.
• Manage and update inventory to ensure full visibility of available lab assets.
• Device Governance & Usage Control
• Enforce lab device usage policies to ensure equipment is not removed or borrowed without proper justification.
• Approve device lending only in exceptional cases (e.g., critical issues), ensuring proper tracking through bug/ticketing systems and regular follow-ups.
• Support a controlled device-sharing process, including temporary lending for contributors who have provided equipment.
• Lab Setup & Bring-up Activities
• Support device bring-up activities, including integration with mobile harnesses and end-to-end setups.
• Ensure proper configuration and connectivity of lab systems and equipment.
• Lab Operations & Maintenance
• Maintain overall lab functionality, including managing USB hub stability and addressing infrastructure-related issues.
• Coordinate relocation and setup of lab infrastructure (e.g., racks, equipment) as needed.
• Manage storage logistics, including organizing and relocating equipment when required.
• Equipment Procurement & Coordination
• Facilitate ordering of lab equipment and hardware in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
• Anticipate upcoming lab needs (e.g., new devices, thermal chambers) and ensure adequate space and resources are available.
• System Stability & Performance
• Ensure stability and scalability of lab environments, including:
• End-to-end test setups
• Bumble setups
• Test devices and boards recovery
• Identify and mitigate sources of lab noise or instability that may impact test reliability.
• Troubleshooting & Debugging
• Diagnose and resolve issues related to unresponsive devices or boards.
• Isolate faulty components (e.g., cables, hubs) and manage complex debugging scenarios involving multiple failure points.
• Recover malfunctioning devices and restore them to operational status.
• Lab Organization & Best Practices
• Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient lab environment.
• Ensure proper cable management to facilitate easier debugging and maintenance.
• Collaborate with lab technicians and stakeholders to implement organizational improvements and optimize space usage.

What you need to be successful

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• Experience with test methodologies, writing test plans and creating test cases
• Experience with troubleshooting and debugging
• Familiarity with power analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters
• Knowledge of Python programming
• Bash scripting
• Interest or initial experience in automation tasks
• Familiarity (academic or personal projects) with:
• Remote interaction with hardware (e.g., rebooting devices, firmware updates)
• Writing scripts for automation in a lab or testing environment
• Willingness to learn and develop skills in test/lab automation and embedded systems
• Basic understanding of software-hardware interaction
• Experience with soldering and reworking
